WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 200-metre silver medallist Usain Bolt launched his 2008 campaign on an impressive note at last Saturday's Lucozade Sport/G.C. Foster Classics. In the men's 100m, Bolt raced to a world leading and complex record 10.03 seconds. Compatriot Asafa Powell, the world's fastest man, had the previous world-leading mark - a 10.04 recorded in Australia last month.
It was behind this performance that Bolt was voted The Gleaner's Top Performer of the Week.
Bolt's early season blast worked out better than Asafa Powell's hand-time, 9.9 seconds, at the complex in 2003.
World champion
The 21-year-old sprinter, who won the World Junior and World Youth 200m titles in 2002 and 2003, stayed focused after two false starts to stroll to a comfortable win ahead of G.C. Foster's Gavin Terrelonge (10.49).
Bolt is now the joint seventh fastest Jamaican with Michael Frater over the distance behind Powell (9.74), Raymond Stewart (9.96), Percival Spencer (9.98), Dwight Thomas (10.00), Michael Green (10.02) and Clement Campbell (10.02). Bolt, the national 200m record holder at 19.75 seconds, was pleased with his performance and predicts better things as time progresses. "I think that was pretty good, because I equalled my personal best," said Bolt, who also finished in 10.03 seconds last year in Rethimno, Greece. "I will be looking to better that time this season."
