Success puts Portmore in a quandary

BACK-TO-BACK wins by Cash Plus Premier League leaders Portmore United have left its management team and coaching staff in a quandary, pondering a starting line-up when seven regular starters return to Ferdie Neita Park this week ahead of a two-match tour of the Cayman Islands.

"If you're asking my opinion, I like what we have but at the end of the day, I have to leave that decision with my coach," chairman Wayne Sinclair said on Sunday after watching striker Roen Nelson fire in another of his specials, a sizzling half-volley in the 16th before watching his 45th minute blast being scrambled over the line by Steven Morrissey for a 2-0 win against St Georges.

Portmore, missing seven star players, who are away on national training in Brazil, were widely expected to request postpone-ments of two premiership games, but instead promoted Under-21 players, who first repaid the coaching staff with a 4-2 win at Tivoli two Sundays ago before stopping St Georges 2-0.

Excellent performance

The victory against Tivoli, all four goals scored by Nelson, who was not picked to travel to Brazil, handed Portmore a one-point lead over their rivals, which they maintained on Sunday, much to the delight of Sinclair.

"It's a great decision to have," he said, anticipating the return of goalkeeper DuWayne Kerr, midfielders Eric Vernon Damion Williams, Wolry Wolfe, Rudolph Austin and Ricardo Cousins.

"The youngsters have stepped up and one has to reward that kind of performance," Sinclair noted.

"It was an excellent perfor-mance by all of them," he added, referring to the likes of left-back Andre Campbell, midfielders Michael Binns, Omar Campbell and Maurice Johnson, who showed his versatility at right-back on Sunday.

St Georges assistant coach Damion Williams said his team played well but was outclassed.

"It's always difficult playing a high-class team when suffering from injuries and players out on cards. It's a pity playing such a pretty game and not getting a goal," he stated.
