Guyana frustrated by rain
published: Tuesday | March 11, 2008

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC):

Guyana's pursuit of full points were thwarted by persistent rain which forced the abandonment of the final day of their fifth round encounter against Combined Campuses and Colleges yesterday.

Not even the excellent drainage system at the National Stadium at Providence could help, as rain which started overnight continued into the day, a single ball from being bowled.

The umpires and officials from the two teams agreed to abandon the game just after tea although the outfield showed little effects from the constant downpour.

Several streets here in the capital were under water yesterday and had the match been played at Bourda, the venue for the three-day warm-up match involving Sri Lanka starting March 17, play would have been abandoned well before lunch.

CCC were 96 for two in their second innings, still 174 away from avoiding an innings defeat after they were bowled out for 151 in their first innings replying to Guyana's first innings 421.

West Indies player Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who scored his second regional first-class double century and with a magnificent unbeaten 207 in Guyana's first innings, was awarded the Man-of-the-Match.

CCC, with defeats against Jamaica and the Windward Islands, beat Barbados outright and moved to 15 points with the three points they collected from this game, while Guyana, who suffered consecutive defeats in their first three away games, earned their first points in the competition.

Guyana now face Leeward Islands in St Thomas in the next round of matches starting Friday.
