THE EDITOR, Sir:
Jamaica's growth and development continues to be stymied due to the negative effects of the increase in the cost of oil, the rate of inflation, the slide of the J$, the brain drain and the crime rate. What makes matters worse, the economy now seems further positioned to face potential setbacks with the introduction of the EPA, based on the analysis by the experts. Hence, in one way or the other, the feeble performances of the country flow through the system to affect those who work in the public and private sectors and especially the unemployed. Everybody is feeling the negative effects of the economic crunch to the point where the response is manifesting itself in the current social disorder in the school system, teachers and other professionals migrating, the general deterioration in law and order and the lack of opportunities for individuals.
In order to resuscitate the economy, protect and guarantee the right of citizens' human existence, there needs to be implemented a radical rethinking to the approach of managing the economy and a social partnership between Government and private enterprises that incorporate and benefit the citizens.
A pilot community
One such approach is to identify a pilot community, introduce alternative sources - solar and/or wind stations technology to power that community. Assess the feasibility of alternative sources against what it would cost the community based on fuel consumption. If workable, then alternative energy sources must play a major role in cutting oil consumption by the wider introduction to other communities, schools and hospitals.
The social partnership must be proper and workable between the agents of Government and private enterprise to restore a level of stability in society which it is hoped will find its way into the classroom, restore discipline and workforce confidence and give a sense of purpose.
