The Editor, Sir:
It is funny but this is a two-way street in relation to migration. I have been married to a Jamaican for over two years now and have over 20 years of management experience in the hospitality sector at the management level. However, in an attempt to be with my husband who chooses to remain in Jamaica and not go abroad, I have applied for many positions even below my title and experience only to be told I don't have 'Caribbean' experience. So, when the people coming to Canada are saying they can only get warehouse jobs in Canada ... consider yourself lucky, because in Jamaica, with all my education and experience, I cannot even get a receptionist job.
Better situation in Canada
One thing for sure, in Canada, we may be reluctant in handing out the senior management jobs to immigrants until they have proved their capabilities, but Canada also will pay for training, upgrading and housing to assist in this integration. As well, we have financial resources that never leave people out on the street hungry or without shelter.
So, why is it that you feel when coming to Canada you feel "on the outside" when in reality it sure works the same in Jamaica.
I am, etc,
