Upset loss at Sporting set back Waterhouse
published: Monday | March 10, 2008

Dwight Nelson, Freelance Reporter

Sporting Central Academy scored an impressive 3-0 upset win over title-chasing Waterhouse in their Cash Plus Premier League football match at Brancourt yesterday.

"I am very proud of my players today after coming off such huge loss last week and getting a deserving win today," Sporting's coach Chris Dawes said in reference to their 0-3 mid-week loss at Harbour View.

It was a game in which both teams got golden opportunities but failed to score in the first half.

The win lifted Sporting Central above Arnett (30) to 32 points, while Waterhouse remained on 39 as it slipped to fourth.

Waterhouse coach Wayne Fairclough said: "We're really going to take this loss very hard as we knew we needed to win in order to stay in contention at the top.

"We fell down because our defensive unit did not track the players and allowed them to penetrate us."

Sporting Central came out a bit more organised for the second half and took the lead in the 50th minute through a goal the officials credited to Ian Palmer, though it was really an own goal. Palmer dribbled down the flank and crossed the ball into Waterhouse's 18-yard box and it deflected off a defender into the goal, leaving McCallum flat-footed.

Grey increased the lead in the 64th minute when he dribbled into the Waterhouse area and placed the ball past McCallum.

Oneike Ford, who came on in the 68th minute for Sporting, picked up two yellow cards by the 80th minute - for dangerous tackle and retaliation - and was given a red card by referee Ricardo Salesman.

Sporting made it 3-0 in the 85th minute when Winston Griffiths knocked Grey's cross past McCallum.
