Jamaica need 68 runs to seal title

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):
An unbroken, 67-run, fifth-wicket stand between Brendan Nash and Tamar Lambert put Jamaica back on track for victory, after a top-order collapse against Barbados in the Carib Beer Cup yesterday.
Chasing 201 for victory, Jamaica reached 133 for four in their second innings - 68 away from victory and the title - when stumps were drawn on the third day of their fifth-round match at Kensington Oval.
Jamaica currently lead the standings in the Carib Beer Series with 42 points - 12 more than second-place Barbados and a win would give them an unassailable lead, even with one match remaining against the Windwards at Chedwin Park in Jamaica.
After the Jamaicans had dismissed Barbados for a second innings total of 290 about 45 minutes after the lunch interval, they slumped to 66 for four in the first half-hour after tea. But left-hander Nash gathered 35 not out from two hours of dogged resistance and Lambert astutely collected 26 not out in one hour and forty-five minutes of steady accumulation to bat through the remainder of the day to stabilise the innings.
Jamaica's problems were created by left-arm fast-medium bowler Pedro Collins. He snared three wickets for 24 runs from 13 overs to give Barbados hope of changing the course of the match.
Jamaica were setback when their captain Chris Gayle was caught at mid-off for five off Collins' younger brother and West Indies fast bowling teammate Fidel Edwards. The visitors suffered another impediment when Xavier Marshall played forward defensively to Collins, edged and was caught behind for two, to leave them 17 for two.
The Jamaicans coasted through the rest of the afternoon period but Collins made another strike on the stroke of tea when he had Brenton Parchment caught at first slip for 30.
Jamaica were 56 for three at tea and hit another snag after the break when Collins had Danza Hyatt caught behind for 12.
Lambert entered and the Barbadians felt they had him lbw first ball when he offered no stroke to a well-pitched delivery from Collins, but umpire Terence Birbal from Trinidad & Tobago ruled in favour of the Jamaica batsman.
Lambert and Nash did not come close to offering the Barbadians a ghost of a chance for the rest of the day.
Earlier, Gayle's strange decision to bowl his uncomplicated off-spin and Nikita Miller's left-arm spin for all but four of the 43 overs that Jamaica delivered in the morning period allowed Barbados to make a fist of it, after they continued from their bedtime total of 177 for five.
Scupper Barbadian batting
Jamaica's drive to scupper the rest of the Barbadian batting was stonewalled by Alcindo Holder, whose 55 from 117 balls in close to two hours contained three fours and two sixes, was the top score in the home team's innings.
