Golding-Clarke fails again
published: Sunday | March 9, 2008

Lacena Golding-Clarke

LACENA GOLDING-CLARKE, in her fifth attempt at indoor silverware, again failed to make it to the medal podium at the 12th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Valencia, Spain yesterday. On the penultimate day, Golding-Clarke, who has reached the final of all five World Indoor 60m hurdles event, again finished fourth in 8.01 seconds. It was her third fourth-place finish at the event. Golding-Clarke, who started out with an eighth-place finish at the 2001 World Indoors in Lisbon, Portugal, ran 8.00 seconds in the semi-finals but returned to be beaten by the American pair of Lolo Jones (7.80) and Candice Davis (7.93) and Cuban Anay Tejeda (7.98) in the final.

Wignall out

In the men's equivalent, Maurice Wignall's 7.70 in semi-final two was not enough to give him a place in the final which Olympic and world champion Xiang Liu took in a season best 7.46 seconds. Fellow Jamaican DeCosta Wright with 7.85 did not get past the first round. DeWayne Barrett finished sixth in his 400m semi-final in 48.81, which was not good enough for a place in today's final. Jamaica, who finished with one silver at the 2006 Championships, are still without a medal after two days. The country's main hopes now rest with the 4x400m relay teams.
