WESTMORELAND, Barbados (CMC):
JAMAICAN DELROY Cambridge had to settle for fourth place as he shot a final-day one-over 73 for a total of 211, as the irrepressible Bill Longmuir surged on Friday to win the ninth annual Barbados Open golf tournament.
Playing at the scenic picturesque Royal Westmoreland course on the island's west coast, England's Longmuir was unstoppable as he birdied five of the last six holes for a brilliant final day 65 and an overall score of 10-under par 206.
He ended three strokes ahead of Bob Cameron of England (209), while another Englishman, Nick Job, was third with 210.
The event was the first for the year on the European Seniors Tour.
Cambridge led for the first two days and was looking for his third European Seniors title, but did not maintain his good form on what was another windy day.
He, however, had his best finish at Royal Westmoreland - going two spots better than his sixth place two years ago.
The flamboyant Longmuir, who struck 74 on the first day and 67 on the second, had the event's best round on the final day. He was understandably pleased with his effort.
"It's a fantastic feeling to win - you don't get many days like this, where nearly everything goes right. There were a few jitters towards the end, but I managed to keep my nerves under control for the most part," he said after receiving the golden trophy.
"The long putt for birdie on 17 was crucial. Once that went in, I knew I had the tournament in the bag. My putter hasn't always been my best friend lately, but today it was. My putting really let me down on the first day, which meant I finished a long way back and had a bit of a mountain to climb. But I still played fairly solidly from tee to green, so I knew I had it in me."
