The Editor, Sir:
The recent callous and wanton attack on our teachers by students and parents is symptomatic of the disregard for the rule of law and indiscipline which currently pervades our society.
Once upon a time, we were led to believe that law enforcement officers have the most dangerous of vocations; but sad to say, the teaching profession is now rivalling the security force as it relates to violence. Our schools have now become virtual battlegrounds, and family members are extremely fearful for the safety of their loved ones when they leave for work each day.
Schools which should be safe havens conducive to proper teaching and learning, the creation of civic pride, honesty, respect and integrity, have now become military fortresses; many school gates are now like maximum security centres. There are metal detectors, razor wires, surveillance cameras and high security walls.
Fearful
Mr Editor, despite all these security devices, our teachers are still being attacked and are fearful.
The Association of Principals and Vice-Principals has been consistent in its appeal to the Ministry of Education to make schools safe zones, in which teachers can practise their craft as true professionals.
It is full time that the Ministry of Education puts mechanisms in place to ensure safe schools.
Students who are disruptive, violate school rules, have no respect for law and order and attend school daily to undermine, confuse and threaten the safety of teachers, other students, administrative and ancillary staff, must be extricated from the regular mainstream school system, and placed in facilities to reform and transform them by any means necessary.
I am, etc.,
MICHAEL STEWART
