The Editor, Sir:
In response to the article published in The Gleaner Sunday, March 2, entitled 'Sick of behaviour in schools', I think the writer is casting the blame on the principal and teachers' supervision, which is unfair. I have seen the video and there are a number of things coming from the video: the girl seems to be from one school, the boys from another and the children seem to be at their own school. This observation is coming from seeing the uniform of the persons in the video.
Now which one of the principals never said anything? And what fact is there that the principal has seen the video and not said anything? Is it that the principal should do an interview with the media? Even though we are not living in the dark ages, there are thousands who still haven't seen the video.
Impossible task for teachers
The question was asked (from the article) "How can students be so free during school hours?" The video was three minutes 16 seconds, less than the time taken to go to the bathroom. I don't think teachers should be blamed for this. The teacher could have gone to the staff room, bathroom, or still be in the classroom (The action took place on the staircase).
It is impossible for a teacher to monitor both the in and out of class actions of 30 students. That's where the surveillance cameras come in. I am also disgusted with the act and think it's a shame and disgrace; but I think the teachers have their hands full and don't need added pressure to be placed on them.
I am, etc.,
