THE EDITOR, Sir:
In recent times, the country has been bombarded with indiscipline in our schools. This has severely affected the morale of both teachers and school administrators. The incidents at the Christiana and Ocho Rios high schools are vivid examples of this dreaded monster that is affecting our society.
I have not done a study on the matter, but strongly believe that there is a strong correlation between poor parenting skills and the antisocial behaviour of our schoolers. It is, therefore, my considered opinion that parenting skills should be taught in school. A curriculum should be developed mainly for students in the secondary schools. There should be a national assessment for this subject. Every student leaving secondary school should be certified as having the requisite parenting skills.
Ill-prepared parents
There are too many parents who are ill-prepared for parenthood. Also, it would be somewhat difficult to train so many parents who need this intervention. Suffice it to say, the horse simply has gone through the gate. We need to be proactive rather than reactive.
I call on the minister of education to give consideration to this matter because this may be the only hope to save our nation.
I am, etc.,
