THE EDITOR, Sir:
My husband and I were in Kingston for five days - he on business and I was enjoying the city and the sunshine. I faithfully read The Gleaner from cover to cover and did get the impression that Jamaicans wanted to regain a little more faith in their fellow countrymen. I do want to, therefore, share with you a few positive experiences during our stay that will make us continue to love Jamaicans forever.
We were taken to view the well-maintained Jewish Cemetery and our host (Tony Lindo) was struggling in vain with the old gate lock. Along came a young man who undid the lock in a flash and ran off before we could offer him a proper thank you.
Cancelled flight
On February 1, our departure day, we arrived at the Norman Manley Airport at 5:00 a.m., only to discover that Toronto was 'snowed in' and, therefore, our flight was cancelled. Our taxi driver was kind and patient and worried about letting us out until we knew what our next plan would be. We were burdened with three cumbersome suitcases which Air Canada offered to store in their private offices. A young gentleman at Air Jamaica called their lounge to have us admitted. We were cared for so well as honoured guests in your country and by Air Jamaica. We shall never forget your warm hospitality.
P.S.: Enjoyed reading about the history of The Gleaner in the book by Marilyn Delevante and Anthony Alberga on the history of the Jews in Jamaica.
I am, etc.,
