PNP heads to visit Spencer's constituency
published: Monday | March 3, 2008

NORTH EAST St Elizabeth, home of embattled Member of Parliament (MP), Kern Spencer, may get a visit from the leadership of the People's National Party (PNP) later this week.

PNP Chairman Robert Pickersgill told The Gleaner yesterday that the purpose of the visit is to discuss, with the constituency, the implications of criminal charges brought against Spencer.

"It is imperative that we meet with them as soon as possible," Pickersgill said.

Spencer spent three nights in jail last week after being arrested by the police and slapped with several charges for his role in the Cuban light-bulb project, over which he exercised ministerial authority. He is alleged to have benefited improperly from the implementation of the energy-saving light-bulb project which racked up costs of $276 million.

The first-time Member of Parliament, who wept openly in the House of Representatives when the accusations were first raised, is facing nine criminal charges. Six of the charges relate to money laundering, one to corruption and two for fraud.
