An orchid affair
published: Sunday | March 2, 2008

Patrons kick up a storm at the Jamaica Cancer Society annual benefit dinner and dance, held at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel, New Kingston, last Saturday. - Winston Sill/Freelance Photographer

Having good time is so much more enjoyable especially when its for a good cause. Those who attended the Jamaica Cancer Society's annual benefit dinner, An Orchid Affair, at the Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston, last Saturday, did indulge in having fun for a worthy cause.

They seem like a quiet bunch at first, but once they were full, they didn't need the continuous hints being dropped during the evening to 'get on bad'. Master of ceremonies for the evening, Dorraine Samuels, dropped her little hints making sure everyone knew where the desig-nated dancefloor was situated.

Chairman of the Cancer Society Earl Jarrett also dropped in a hint or two, and once his serious business of delivering the keynote address was over, Dr Ernest Pate, Pan American Health Organisation and World Health Organisation representative in Jamaica, added his two-cents worth too.

After the formalities, they all practised what they preached and hit the dancefloor. Everyone soon followed suit and the ballroom became a mass of flailing limbs. Between dancehall soca, the congo man, and the tatti, everyone had a jolly good time.

A secret note? Chairman of the Jamaica Cancer Society Earl Jarrett makes notes under the attentive gaze of administrative officer at the Cancer Society, Kim Mair.

Jamaican playwright Trevor Rhone is greeted by the administrative director of the Jamaica Cancer Society, Carol Blair.

A quiet group at first, the attendees 'drop foot' once the volume was cranked up.
