Fish in a bowl
published: Thursday | February 21, 2008

West Portland Member of Parliament Daryl Vaz was not his usually lively self at the sitting of the House of Representatives at Gordon House last week Tuesday. Throughout the sitting Vaz, who is at the centre of an election petition to have him removed as MP, seemed to be in a world by himself as demonstrated by this big intake of breath through a wide open mouth. - Rudolph Brown/Chief Photographer

DARYL VAZ'S massive yawn, which made the front page of this newspaper last week, was the subject of comment from the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Delroy Chuck.

"I think it is very important that members would recognise that we are like a goldfish in a fish bowl and we have to be very careful how we behave even when we are sitting in our seats," Chuck said yesterday.

Chuck appealed to journalists to avoid presenting aspects of the parliamentary proceedings which may not be of good taste.

"Some of the things that occur could be reserved," Chuck said.

The Speaker, however, urged members to "note that we must be of our best behaviour and conduct ourselves inside here with what is expected of parliamentary decorum."

Last week, Vaz, the member of parliament for West Portland was photographed with his mouth wide open. During the entire proceedings, the normally lively Vaz had looked a shadow of himself as he sat in the House.
