Five University of the West Indies (UWI) alumni are to receive the UWI Alumni Association's prestigious Pelican Award this Sunday.
The ceremony will take place at at 6 p.m. at the UWI Assembly Hall. The awardees are Dr Knox E.W. Hagley, for outstanding services in administration and research in the field of medical sciences; Professor Franklin Knight for excellence in education and research in history as well as contribution to the UWI; Dennis H. Lalor for contribution to the development of and dedicated services to the UWI; Dr Henry I.C. Lowe for excellence in the field of medicinal chemistry; Dr Muriel Lowe for pioneering work in the field of pulmonary medicine and sustained contribution to the medical profession.The awards will be presented at the commemoration concert, which features Carol Gonzalez, Nickeisha Barnes and Joan Andrea Hutchinson, and are part of the overall activities to mark the 2008 UWI Commemoration Celebrations and Alumni Week. Each year, the commemoration and alumni week celebrations mark the founding of the institution and are held in honour of an outstanding individual. This year, distinguished librarian and educator Professor Emerita Daphne Douglas is being honoured.
