Minnows get chance to enhance reputation
published: Wednesday | January 30, 2008

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

Local league minnows will be licking their lips at a chance to tackle the Premier League big boys when the Western Union/Kingston and St. Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Jackie Bell Knock-Out competition continues with six games scheduled for today.

Perhaps still smarting from a last minute loss to Tivoli Gardens in top flight action on the weekend, defending champions Harbour View will not be in a laughing mood when they travel to Cling Cling Oval to face Major League sixth place team Olympic Gardens.

Despite fairly indifferent form so far this season after their domination of the local football landscape just a few months, the Stars of the East are not expected to be challenged serious by the former top-tier club.

Tivoli Gardens will also be heavy favourites when they face Rae Town at Breezy Castle. Another Major League team Rae Town are currently third in that competition, but will be hard pressed to stay with the in-form Premier League leaders.

Confident

At the Stadium East field a resurgent Arnett Gardens will be looking to stamp their class when they take on Swallowfield. Steadily recovering from a mediocre start to the season, roaring past major league mid-table Swallowfield could be just what the doctor ordered as the 'Junglists' look to stay confident.

At Constant Spring, Super League team Cavalier will be a bit more confident than those lower league teams headed into most of today's fixtures when they face Premier League strugglers August Town.

However, August Town, who are second to last in the Premier League standings, will still be heavily favoured as Cavalier's early season form has not set the Super League on fire, having only won two games so far and finding themselves in eighth place.

Though they have had a far more impressive season fourth place, Santos will still have their hands full when they take on a surging Waterhouse at the Bell Chung Oval.

Standings

The Drewsland team may have stumbled over the weekend following a loss to bottom-placed Village in the Premier League, but they are expected to have little problems finding their footing against Super League opponents.

In the day's other game, Bull Bay, who find themselves in second position in the Super League, will start favourites when they take on Seaview Gardens at the Seaview Oval. Seaview are currently fifth in the Major League standings.

All games begin at 3:00pm.
