LINSTEAD, ST CATHERINE:
The proposed transport centre for the town of Linstead in St Catherine is yet to get off the ground.
The ground breaking exercise for the construction of the $25 million facility was done on July 24 last year by then Minister of Housing, Transport, Water and Works, Robert Pickersgill. He promised completion in four months.
Today, the site, which is being used by minibuses and taxis plying the Linstead to Spanish Town and Linstead to Bog Walk routes, is covered by marl.
A group of taxi men and passengers, who spoke to The Gleaner on Saturday, complained about the dust nuisance that they have to endure on a daily basis.
They also registered their concern about the inconvenience caused by the lack of sanitary facilities. They contend that it is high time the construction phase begins.
When completed, the infrastructure is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in the town. The facility will house parking bays, waiting areas, sanitary conveniences and pedestrian walkways. It will be able to accommodate 450 taxis and 53 minibuses.
