The Editor, Sir:
Hats off to Mr Duncan from Hanover for his retort to Mr. Lawman Lynch's suggestion that condoms should be issued in high schools. It is depressing to see how far people are willing to go to destroy our children, and the depths to which morals have fallen in our society.
I believe the Ministry of Education needs to set up a code of conduct that dictates the way some of our teachers operate, so that discipline and high moral standards can be maintained in the school system.
Being in youth ministry I have witnessed, and have been informed by students from different high schools, of hard liquor being sold to students,by teachers, on school campuses, at barbecues and fairs; so much so that in one instance a female student, after consuming so much liquor, was gang-raped. Who takes responsibility for these occurrences? The school? The parents? The children themselves? Who?
It is sad to think that gone are the days when school used to be a place where learning and discipline was the number one priority, and teachers were seen as highly respected individuals, worthy of emulation, rather than 'peers' to students, most of whom are still trying to find their true identities. Why do we seek ways to destroy our children?
Thank God for those teachers who are still trying to make a difference in our schools.
I am, etc.,
