Tivoli, Jamalco final
published: Tuesday | January 29, 2008

Tivoli Gardens 'A' and Jamalco will contest this year's final of the Jamaica Netball Association (JNA)/Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) Open League competition, following respective semi-final wins over Waulgrovians and Windalco on Saturday at the Leila Robinson Courts.

Jamalco thrashed Windalco 33-16 and Tivoli Gardens 'A' stopped Waulgrovians 'A' 34-28.

Romelda Aiken (17 goals from 20 attempts), Marsha Murphy (eight from 12) and Margaret Lawrence (eight from eight) scored the goals for Jamalco, while Diana Millwood (eight from 11) and Petal Smith (five from 10) were the leading scorers for Windalco.

Tivoli Gardens dominated the match from the opening whistle as they led 18-12 at half-time.

Cleopatra Grant led the way with 30 goals from 39 attempts for the west Kingston team, who led 25-19 at the end of the third period.

Grant received support from Sophia Hamilton (four from eight), as Tivoli Gardens 'A' romped to victory.

Simone Forbes, with 21 goals from 26 attempts, and Suzette Desouza, seven from 12, scored for Waulgrovians.

Better all-round team

Sylvester Campbell, coach of Tivoli Gardens, said: "It was a very good game, because even though we won the game by six goals we knew from the start that Waulgrovians were a good team.

"The Waulgrovians team fought to the end, but I think that we are a better all-round team than them because we have the experience and depth in our squad," Campbell added.

"There are still some areas where we need to tighten up on, especially in our mid-court and this is one of our main areas of concern now," explained Campbell.

Simone Forbes, vice-captain of Waulgrovians, blamed the loss on a poor start.

"We started out flat and when we got into ourselves and into the game it was a little too late, but congratulations to Tivoli Gardens, they played well."

Meanwhile, Tivoli Gardens 'B' and Police 'A' will face off in the consolation knockout final. Tivoli Gardens 'B' whipped Alpha 'A' 30-11, while Police 'A' stopped Skibo 'B' 31-28 in the semi-finals.

The finals of both competitions will be played on Saturday at the same venue.
