NOTE-WORTHY: Concerned about cops
published: Tuesday | January 29, 2008

Concerned about cops

Policemen are supposed to take care of the citizens, not to create a divide or cause harm to them. One has to wonder how did this rift between the citizens and the police come about. I think Jamaica needs a new standard for hiring prospective officers of the law. For one thing, better education of candidates should be paramount. For another, thorough background check of every candidate should be conducted before hiring. There should be emphasis on character, moral standard and, as I mentioned, education. Many foreigners have mentioned to me that they are appalled at the corruption amongst the members of the constabulary force and have vowed never to return to Jamaica.

Vernamfield cue

The recent high tide flooding of the Palisadoes road to the Norman Manley Airport in Kingston shows the dire need for the development of Vernamfield as a viable thir to the present airport system. It was just last year when Hurricane Dean made access impossible and remember also Hurricane Ivan in 2004 which wreaked similar havoc to the airport access road. This affects not only inconvenience to passenger traffic including business travellers; but also important freight transport. Is the government willing to allow the businesses that are done through that airport to be lost to other Caribbean airports that are more accessible?

Minister Henry, you now have your cue to argue for the development of Vernamfield. Please make the best of it.

Searching for friend

I am searching for a friend of my mother's and am using unconventional methods to find her. I was reading an article online from The Gleaner that was published on Saturday. December 8, 2007, in the section titled Across the Nation, written by Marlene McPherson. My mother's friend's name is Rosalie Smikle who was described in the article as the acting Senior Collector of Taxes of Morant Bay. I am wondering by chance, if this would facilitate her making contact with me.

Schoolmates

Trying to see if I could contact any of my schoolmates. My name is Oswald Dawkins (Robinson) went to Porus Primary School in the '60s; just like to know and maybe some day we have a reunion and make a contribution to our old institution. I have had my name changed to Dawkins.
