St Jago girls show fine form
published: Sunday | January 20, 2008

Elton Tucker, Assistant Sport Editor

ST. JAGO High's girls dominated the high school relays at the 23rd Howard Jackson meet at Paul Bogle Junior High in Morant Bay yesterday.

The Spanish Town-based school, in the absence of main high school rivals Holmwood Technical, Edwin Allen High and Vere Technical, swept all before them in the 4x600m events. They were on target to do the same in the 4x150m but were denied by Wolmer's Girls in the Class Three girls in one of the tightest finishes of the afternoon.

In a combined final for the girls' 4x600m in which only three teams competed, St. Jago took the Class Two event in 7:46.3 ahead of Mona High, 8:34.6. St. Jago's Class Three quartet crossed the line in 7:48.1. On a 300m track with some sharp turns which made sprinting difficult, St. Jago won the Class Four 4x150m in 1:23.9 ahead of Alpha 1:27.8 and Queen's 1:28.9. In a very close finish, Wolmer's got the better of St. Jago in the Class Three 4x150m clocking 1:21.9 with the runners-up hitting the line in 1:22.1. Queen's were third in 1:25.6.

In Class Two, St. St. Jago, 1:20.8, finished ahead of Queen's 1:21.8 while in Class One they won in 1:22.0 with Queen's earning another runner-up spot in 1:22.2.

The boys' honours were shared among Kingston College, St. Jago, Jamaica College and defending inter-secondary champions Calabar.

St. Jago's boys scored a runaway win in the 4x600m finishing in 6:37.9 ahead of JC, 6:46.6 and KC, 6:52.3.

Powerful final leg

In Class Two, JC, led by the outstanding middle-distance runner Waqar DaCosta who ran a powerful final leg, hit the tape well ahead of Calabar (6:15.1) and KC (6:16.9). The winners clocked 6:12.0. KC were equally impressive in taking the Class One 4x600m in 5:53.0 with Donahue Williams running the final leg. Fair Prospect High snatched second in 5:54.9 while Camperdown were third in 6:00.4. There were also four separate winners in the 4x150m. KC took Class Four in 1:17.3, St. Jago triumphed in Class Three in 1:14.2, Calabar grabbed Class Two in 1:10.7, while Class One was won by JC in 1:08.5 just edging out Calabar who were second in 1:08.6.

At press time, the results for the 4x300m events were not available.
