Jack Be Good obliges in feature
published: Sunday | January 20, 2008

Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer

APPRENTICE RAYAN Wilson made full use of a chance ride at Caymanas Park yesterday with an emphatic victory aboard the even-money favourite JACK BE GOOD in the 1100-metre feature race for the Millard Ziadie Cup, this for $380,000- $330,000 claimers.

Deputising for fellow apprentice Delroy Beharie, who fell heavily when his mount TOCUMEN broke a leg in the fourth race, Wilson grasped the opportunity with both hands to chalk up his first win of the season.

Well away from the number one post position, JACK BE GOOD was quickly sent in chase of the easy-going leader PSYCHEDELIC (3-1) under former champion Shane Ellis, as both raced clear of the pack passing the half mile.

JACK BE GOOD mounted his challenge entering the straight, quickly went by PSYCHEDELIC and sprinted clear from below the distance to win by all of nine lengths from TASSY'S WHIP (5-2), a neck ahead of MELINDGATA (8-1) and PSYCHEDELIC in a field of eight.

Wilson said he was happy to have been offered the ride after Beharie's misfortune and followed the trainer's instructions to the letter:

"The trainer instructed me to break sharply with Jack Be Good from the number one post position, track the cheap speed in the backstretch before producing him from the home turn. It was smooth sailing in the straight and the truth is that this horse is just better than them," said the 24-year-old apprentice.

A 6-y-o bay gelding by Pat N Jac out of the Texas Prospector mare Good Prospect, JACK BE GOOD, who had previously won over 1200 metres on New Year's Day, is owned by Triple A Stables and trained by Lawrence Freemantle.

Beharie, meanwhile, escaped injury even though admitting that he was badly shaken up when TOCUMEN went down at the 1000-metre (five-furlong) point of the course after racing prominently in the race won by ECSTACY.

TOCUMEN was put down after the fall and Beharie was unable to honour his remaining rides on the 10-race programme after he was rushed to the First Aid Post.

Champion jockey Omar Walker highlighted the 10-race programme with three winners in 2-5 favourite STATE PRINCE, 3-5 favourite DR. BADOO and 1-2 favourite ALLIEDFORCE who surprisingly had to pull out all the stops in order to win the overnight allowance mile in a driving finish from 29-1 outsider SIR KHAN and the 99-1 outsider JODI'S CALL, who almost pulled off a stunning upset in a field of 11 when heads on with ALLIEDFORCE 100 metres out. The winning distances were a neck by a head.

Walker has so far ridden seven winners to be joint leader in the standings with Shane Ellis, who notched a double.
