Portmore hammer August Town 5-0, Nelson returns with four-timer
published: Monday | January 14, 2008

Keisha Hill, Staff Reporter

Roen Nelson ... back at Portmore.

Prolific striker Roen Nelson proved yet again to be a man for the big occasion as he netted a four-timer for resurgent Portmore United to earn a 5-0 win over August Town in the Cash Plus Premier League game at the UWI Bowl yesterday.

The victory marked Nelson's triumphant return to the Premier League competition after a two-year absence and a spell with Trinidadian club Joe Public.

August Town started out well but their momentum diminished 10 minutes into the first half. Despite numerous goalscoring opportunities, they were unable to deliver a good performance, much to the disappointment of their home crowd.

Adrian Reid netted the first goal for Portmore United in the 37th minute. Soon after, Nelson created more anxiety in August Town's defence when he headed into the goal from a melee, as his team moved to a 2-0 lead in the 45th minute.

Second goal

On resumption of the second half, Nelson fired home his second goal in the 69th minute, much to the dismay of August Town's goalkeeper Damion Hyatt.

With August Town failing to break down Portmore's rush, Nelson again scored in the 82nd and 90th minute, to ensure his team's victory.

Christopher Bender, coach of Portmore United which advanced to 34 points, said: "We created quite a number of chances to score and we delivered. Our conversion rate has increased from the last game. All we did was carry the training performance over into the game and it worked for us. The team played well and we tried to control the tempo of the game."

Hugh McCarthy, coach of August Town, did not mince words in stating his disappointment.

"It is a disappointing result in every way. We have to try and learn from this. The next game we get into we have to try a different approach and, hopefully, we can turn things around," said McCarthy.

They are third from bottom on 16 points.
