CORONER for the Corporate Area, Resident Magistrate Patrick Murphy, is scheduled to hear today whether the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) has presented details of an investigation into the death of Morris Allen seven years ago.
In October, Murphy ordered the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security to release the findings of the JDF investigation by October 26. The JDF has, however, reportedly not produced the documents and the Attorney General's office is seeking leave to appeal the ruling in a higher court.
In a release issued on the weekend, human rights lobby group Jamaicans For Justice (JFJ) argued that the appeal has fallen outside the prescribed time frame for such an act.
Carolyn Gomes, JFJ executive director, told The Gleaner yesterday that she hopes Murphy will not soften his stance.
"We believe he should not reverse his decision and the documents should be produced in court," Dr. Gomes said.
Morris Allen was shot and killed in Mountain View, east Kingston, in January 2001. The police said he and another man travelling in a car opened fire at a police/military squad which was stationed in the area.
The car reportedly crashed into a wall when the security forces retaliated. The other man in the vehicle escaped.
Three soldiers involved in the incident were dismissed from the army.
