THE EDITOR, Sir:AS I watched TVJ on Monday night, I was horrified at the number of stories of parents locking the gates to schools to make their demands heard. This is a very disturbing trend which has escalated over the past two years. Who gave these parents the right to determine who is most qualified and suitable to run an educational institution? They obviously do not realise that long service in teaching or popularity are not the only criteria used in selecting persons for this stressful administrative position.
Principals in Jamaica today often need training in management, leadership and computer skills. Instead of teaching their children to block roads, lock gates and demonstrate, these parents should go back to school themselves, because many of them are not in a position to help their children with their homework and projects.
To add insult to injury, the poll taken during the news indicated that most Jamaicans who called in were in support of the parents' actions. That is very disturbing feedback; let's hope it is inaccurate.
I am, etc.,
