With yesterday's start of the new school term, students, parents and teachers of the York Town Primary School got an unpleasant surprise when they arrived at the institution.
Thieves had broken into the school on the weekend and stolen computers, a radio, a television and the public address system.
Police reports confirmed that five of the computers were found hidden in bushes near the school.
Some residents of York Town staged a peaceful protest in the community, demanding that the relevant authorities clear the more than 50 acres of bushes which surround the school as, they say, the bushes have now become a hiding place for criminals.
Clearing of the land
Councillor of the York Town division, Uphel Purcell, told The Gleaner that the Clarendon Parish Council has written to the owner of the land on several occasion about the clearing of the land.
"To date, (he) has turned deaf ears on our request," he said.
Councillor Purcell added: "Myself, along with some residents of the community, also spoke with (the owner) and he only made us promises that he will soon have the land cleared."
