published: Tuesday | January 8, 2008

Jamaica's murder rampage is continuing in the New Year with at least 10 persons killed across the island over the past three days.

A lone gunman shattered the peace that had been holding in the volatile Crawford Street area in Mt. Salem, St. James, early Sunday night when he crept up on a group of residents and opened fire, killing one man and injuring another.

The dead man, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds, has been identified as 19-year-old George Grant, an unemployed resident of Crawford Street. The injured man who was admitted to the Cornwall Regional Hospital in a stable condition is a 21-year-old resident of the same area.

A man was shot dead and two others injured by gunmen at Federal Road, Sydenham, St. Catherine, on Sunday night.

Dead is 69-year-old Alanzo Johnson of South Topez Crescent, Brampton, Canada, while injured are two senior citizens, aged 73 and 69, both of St. Catherine addresses.

Men playing cards

Reports from the St. Catherine North Police are that, about 10:05 p.m., three men were among a group of persons playing cards at a house at Federal Road. While at the location, a group of gunmen entered the premises and opened fire hitting the three. The police were summoned and the injured men taken to hospital where Johnson was pronounced dead and the other men admitted in stable condition.

Clarendon, which recorded some of the first murders in the year, continued to be affected by violence.

On Saturday morning, about 3:25, Fitz George Taylor, otherwise called Balance, a 29-year-old barber of Raymond's district, Hayes, Clarendon, was murdered in his yard by unknown assailants.

On Saturday night, about 7:35 Hopeton Henry, otherwise called 'Irie', a 42-year-old sign artist of the volatile Canaa was killed in the community.

According to police reports, Henry was at the side of a shop in the community when two men on foot approached him, one brandishing a handgun. The gunman opened fire hitting him. He was taken to the May Pen Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The police have not ascertain a motive for the killing.
