The Editor, Sir:The banks have spoken. The Financial Services Commission (FSC) has spoken and now its time for Jamaicans to speak out.
The year 2007 has not been so progressive for many Jamaicans, with the many crimes and violence, high cost of living and the changing of Government. Despite the many adversities, Jamaicans have risen to the occasion by whatever means. Most miserable of them all is to divulge themselves into what seems to be their only saviour Cash Plus Ltd.
Jamaicans knew that it was a risk; however, they were forced financially to take on the mantle. The Government of Jamaica at that time probably was more realistic and would watch them putting their money to the test. As cost of living escalates, more and more Jamaicans see the need to take the risk force-fully. When they sign those contracts, they must have conditioned their minds that this entity could collapse. They would not believe that the Government and its affiliates would ever shut in their money.
PM needs to intervene
The Prime Minister, as a citizen of Jamaica, one who is enthused about you being a leader, I am appealing to you to intervene in this delicate situation. Because thousands if not millions of your Jamaican people have invested in this business just to cope with the financial crisis. I know that there is very little you can do about this increase in cost of living because you have just taken over as a leader, so it would be very much appreciated if you could see the people's plight of trying to survive. You had warned them. However, Cash Plus did not go under, and it was pushed under by people who were to be looking out for Jamaicans.
Hon. Prime Minister I have no doubt in mind that you are extremely smart and are aware of the psychological effect that this will have on Jamaicans. We can hardly deal with crime and violence, and this scenario will certainly push it to the extreme. I don't have a problem if it is regularised because it would be a good way for the country to yield some money in terms of taxes. However, this has to be handled with delicacy.
