Fashion trends that started in 2007 did not disappear with the pop of a champagne bottle, or with the sound of fireworks lighting up the sky. Instead, some spilled over into 2008.

From oversize bags and blouses to wedge-heeled shoes, some trends are here for a while.

Georgette Smith, make-up artist/stylist, told Flair that space odyssey, the '80s era, metallics: neon-coloured clothing, and '70s-style animal and floral prints are some of the main fashion items that have been carried over.

Her fashion forecast for 2008 includes trends from the '50s and mid-'60s.

Designs

"The past is an inspiration, as is now evident and being featured by numerous designers, Ms. Smith notes.

"The entire craze of the '50s and '60s will be in style again. Items such as high-heeled pumps (some tailored), pencil skirts, wide belts, loose blouses with puffy collars and sleeves, floaty blouses and dresses in solid, vibrant colours whether floral or print, appear to be the rage once again," the stylist adds.

Grey, black, white, tan, yellow and purple will still remain prominent colours this year, Ms. Smith predicts, but warns that grey, black and white are problematic colours that should be worn with discretion, so launder carefully.

Oversize bags are still a hit. Bright colours and patent textures are a couple of the changes made to them. Found at Rodeo Drive.

Peep-toe shoes are another trend that has been carried over into '08. Wedges with patent finishes are now more fashionable. They can be found at Brit Bran.

Other colours to watch:

Bright colours with subtle undertones which include lemon yellow, lime green, light grey and orange undertones.

Neutrals with extremely washed pastels.

Blue (various shades of blues), ivory and silver.

Red (various shades of red), olive green, army, and purple (various shades of purple).

Canary yellow, mustard yellow, pink and fuchsia (grounded into earth tones such as tans).

Here are some wardrobe staples:

A pencil skirt.

A wide belt.

A tailored trouser pant.

A fitted jacket.

Wrap blouses and dresses or the other option, anything ruffled.

Metallic accents including grey metals and gold.

Denim items (coloured denim is in).

Anything turtleneck.

Anything leopard print: Belt, handbag or undies.

Wedge heels or any Lucite (plastic) heels.

Items were found at: Brit Bran, Rodeo Drive and Fragrances and Gifts.
