2007: Winners and losers
published: Monday | January 7, 2008

Audrey Chin

Personally, 2007 was better than '06, but for many it sucked. Here's my somewhat crazy look at some (and I stress some) of what caught my eye in the past year.

WINNERS

Veronica Campbell- Brown:

Her 100-metre gold medal performance at the World Championships was inspiring.

Bruce golding

Being Prime Minister is easily one of the world's toughest jobs, especially in Jamrock, but hey that's what he wanted so you have to call him a winner.

Asafa powell

Lowering the world mark again is an astonishing feat. Running below 9.80 as many times as he has, a feat that 10 years ago looked like a pipe dream, is almost superhuman.

Audrey Chin

A victory for women all over I think.

The NCU lads

Stunned the world with their entry into the Microsoft Imagine Cup global competition and placed third

LOSERS

Kern Spencer

What more can I say?

Asafa powell

The only man who makes both of these lists. It might seem wrong but let's face it, the confessed meltdown at the World Championships still remains a big disappointment for some.

Lascelles Chin

We're not saying the fellow is broke, but just not as endowed as former years.

Portia simpson miller

Wasn't entirely her fault but as the captain of the PNP ship, she was at the helm when the boat came sinking down .

Crime, violence

The victims of crime and violence for another year: This one is an unfortunate staple and included an alarming number of policemen, the very bastions of law in our society.

People and events which made me smile (a rarity for me)

Yendi Phillipps

Miss Jamaica World 2007 Yendi Phillipps. - Winston Sill/Freelance Photographer

It doesn't matter how she did at the Miss World finals; she's a brilliant beauty with a caring heart and that's all that matters to me.

The young Reggae Boyz team

Won the silver medal at the Pan Am Games, the first medal in the sport at that games. Had the referee not gone braindead in awarding that crappy penalty, who knows?

Don-Christopher Barnes

The eight-year-old boy who saved his friend from drowning. Attaboy!

AWARDS TIME

Why Did This Take So Long Award: The Eastern Hanover constituency seat.

Full Time Now Award: Jamaica College wins another Manning Cup ... finally!

Might Wish He Was A Car Salesman Award: Carlos Hill and David Smith.

Needs A Vacation Award: Danville Walker.

HAPPY TRAILS TO

Lucius Thomas (retired), Bora Milutinovic (booted), Crenston Boxhill (saw the rake and stepped out). The Foot in Mouth Award: Everald Warmington and Bobby Montague; as granny used to say, "not everything good fe eat, good fe talk."

TO COME IN '08

More investment scheme wranglings. Oh dear!

Rene Simoes returns to the Reggae Boyz. Jesus saves!

Olympics in Beijing (come Asafa, beat the 'Gay' fellow).
