General Hospital - Rebecca Herbst celebrates10 years at the soap
published: Saturday | December 29, 2007

Rebecca Herbst

Elizabeth Webber has been torn between two lovers - so, what else is new? - on General Hospital for most of her adult life. It's been Lucky/Jason, Jason/Lucky. When I met up with Rebecca Herbst recently, who has played Liz since 1997, I asked her if the Lucky/Jason storyline would ever be resolved - or maybe they should just throw a new guy into the mix?

"I think the last person Elizabeth needs in her life right now is another man," Rebecca says. "I think she's got too many already. Liz and Lucky have so much history that I don't think they are ever going to be too far from each other. Elizabeth has Jason's baby, and that connects them as well. I think they're going to keep that drama going for as long as they can."

Challenging month

As she recalls the drama of Windermere and the Black and White Ball, Rebecca becomes very animated. "It was great. It was crazy. Just having to be in ball gowns and being wet half the time. And they kept shoving me in the stables. Then they keep hosing you down, and the water's cold. That month of shooting was more challenging than it normally is, but it's fun. It's fun to kind of mix it up. And it's fun that we all get to work together. We love doing sweeps because we all get to work with people who we normally don't, so I love that."

Although the storyline was all high-drama, intrigue and death, there were many funny moments while shooting. As Rebecca recalls: "When Emily was lying there dead on the bench, her stomach wouldn't stop growling. And we were having to do these crying scenes, and there she is with her stomach growling, and it was so hard to get through the scenes. I'm like: 'Die already! I can't talk to you if you're stomach's making noise!' So we fed her."

Really good run

Having recently celebrated 10 years on GH, Rebecca is still very happy and excited about her work. "It's been a really good run. I was very excited to meet that 10-year mark. (On my anniversary date) I came home to a living room full of balloons and flowers, and my children had written me cards. My husband (Michael Saucedo, ex-Juan, GH) made sure that it was celebrated."

So, when she originated the role of Elizabeth a decade ago, did she ever envision all the drama and turmoil that her character would go through during the years?

"I never really envisioned it because I had never watched soap operas, so I wasn't really privy to what characters go through and what they're all about. My sister and I were not allowed to watch them growing up, so the drama was ... well, I knew they were dramatic, but not THIS dramatic."

She adds: "Now, nothing surprises me."
