EDITORIAL - Opportunity for a new start
Prime Minister Bruce Golding will, by now, have already crafted the message he intends to deliver to Jamaicans to mark the start of the new year. Since it is his first New Year message in this job, we expect a slight difference in the tone from that which he adopted when he was Leader of the Opposition.

Happy birthday to me

Today is my birthday. I am not telling you of this anniversary because I want you to send me presents I will not refuse them. I am just mentioning it as a matter of record. In fact, as a young child, my parents gave me a present at Christmas and said it was also a birthday present. (Neita)

Happy Holidays' vs 'Merry Christmas'

The Editor, Sir: I have observed among developing countries a lack of originality in everything, including behaviour. The issue of Christmas has caused quite a stir in the U.S.A. in recent years, with members of various religions voicing concerns over the use of the words 'Merry Christmas'.

Issue: The Church and gambling

THE EDITOR, Sir: I heard that Minister of Tourism Mr. Edmund Bartlett wants to bring casino gambling to Jamaica because it injects foreign exchange into the country. I understand that the Church is against the plan.
