Jamaica-born Miramar commissioner suspended, faces felony gun charge
published: Wednesday | December 26, 2007

Fort Lauderdale Florida:

City Commissioner Fitzroy Salesman was suspended from office on Friday for the second time in two years, after he was charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, a felony.

Gov. Charlie Crist suspended Salesman late Friday afternoon.

Salesman, 50, who is originally from Jamaica, had turned himself in at the Broward County Jail on Friday morning. The charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of three years. He was released after posting a $5,000 bond.

According to police, Salesman on November 21 brandished a .45-caliber Springfield semi-automatic handgun after an argument with another shopper at a Miramar Winn Dixie. Citing the advice of his attorney, Salesman declined to comment after his release.

This is Salesman's third brush with the law in nine years. It comes about eight months after he was reinstated to office after being acquitted on DUI charges in March. In 1998, he was charged with disorderly intoxication in Miami-Dade County. Prosecutors dropped the case when he agreed to anger-management classes.

Miramar city leaders said it's too early to know if the charge is going to have an impact on the five-member city commission.

"Obviously, I would prefer that this was not happening,'' said Mayor Lori Moseley. "I have faith that we as a commission will continue to go forward and put the needs of our residents first, regardless of what happens.''
