The Editor, Sir:We have been hearing a lot of talk about building a better Jamaica, a better nation, and let us unite. But how can we build a better Jamaica when there are so many barriers, colour prejudice, prejudice from all angles, and antisocial behaviour?
How can we build a better Jamaican etiquette and good manners are lacking a great deal in our society today? When aggression, egotism, badmindedness, hatred and greed are taking over?
Can we unite when a person of humility, peace and tolerance decides to render good for evil - being looked upon as being soft, timid and cowardly?
Problems
How can we build a better nation when 90 per cent of our women will have no relationship with a man who does not own a car; people are trying to get rich overnight - with the get rich-quick mentality syndrome - when most women are looking for career men to marry - instead of respecting the masculine gender - and seeing a man as an important despite his qualification.
How can we build a better Jamaica when in order to feel like a worthwhile human being, to feel a sense of security, a sense of belonging: you have to have a car and a university degree.
God gave every person a talent. What would happen if everyone was a doctor or a teacher? Who would take care of the ground provisions? Who would keep the country clean from pollution?
Can we really and truly unite as one people when many people are not satisfied being black and bleaching their skin.
How are we going to do it when 95 per cent of our people are living in fear because of crime and violence - the lack of trust and confidence. How can we unite and have a better society when people know the 'Golden Rule' like a poem and are failing to put it into practice.
The time is long, long overdue for people to examine themselves and come to their senses.
When will that be? Heaven help us! Finally, can Jamaica be transformed into a good society when education is becoming a god; taking the place of God?
I am, etc.,
