Junior tennis talent encourages McGregor
published: Tuesday | December 18, 2007

LeVaughn Flynn, Staff Reporter

The sixth annual Petcom Open Junior Tennis Championships ended yesterday at the Liguanea Club and organiser Llockett McGregor says the tournament unearthed some bright prospects for the future.

"We can now identify at least six really good under 10 players and that is what we're looking for to build the game," said McGregor.

The three-day tournament saw over 82 children vying for trophy prizes in the boys 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 and under categories and the girls 14 and under and open events.

McGregor added that the tournament was competitive in all categories and that it is an important stage for Jamaica's next crop of tennis stars.

Young tennis starlets

"Dominic Pagon, Kristofer Martin and Tinesta Rowe have all come up through the Petcom Championships," said McGregor of three of Jamaica's young tennis starlets who have earned scholarships in the USA. "This programme has made it possible for them to show their talent and compete."

Jodiann Brooks won the girls' 14 and under title after defeating Erica Delapenha 7-5, 6-4. Siquena Sinclair was the other girls cham-pion, defeating Shantal Blackwood 6-4, 6-3 in the Open division.

In the boys' competition, the 10 and under title went to Adrian Bicknell. Bicknell was leading 4-2 before winning by default after Roger Lyn withdrew.

Simon Levy defeated Eric Delapenha 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 to take the boys' 12 and under, Ryan Simms got by Nicholas Chambers 6-2, 6-3 for the boys' 14 and Under and Matthew Rodriguez defeated Winfred Winebeer by default in the boys' 18 and under.

The boys' 16 and under final between Lawrence Salmon and Sheldon McIntosh will be decided tomorrow.
