Remove political posters
published: Tuesday | December 18, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I welcome the call by the new mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Charles Sinclair Jr., for the removal of all political advertisements from the public spaces in the parish of St. James. This is a move that ought to be embraced by all the other parish councils, the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation, and the Portmore municipality.

Perhaps, as part of their new mandate and since it is the level of government responsible for public cleansing, the parish councils should enact a regulation or call on central government to enact such a law that mandates the removal of all political party signs and such other paraphernalia from all public spaces within thirty (30) days of an election. Failure to so comply should result in a fine to either the candidate whose candidacy was being promoted or to the political party.

I am, etc.,
