The Editor, Sir:After reading yesterday's article on 'gangster cops' in Montego Bay, I wonder how much better the new Commissioner of Police will fare than his predecessor if he is not given the autonomy to act in the manner that is warranted and appropriate to weed out the parasites in the constabulary force. Lucius Thomas appeared to be hog-tied when it came to disciplining crooked cops and the same was applicable to his predecessor. I do not envision Hardley Lewin being any more successful.
Criminal elements
We all know that the criminal elements in Jamaica are out of control, and that the general populace is difficult to deal with. But remember now that the Jamaica Constabulary Force is a voluntary body - meaning that the cops who do not like the rules could always 'volunteer' themselves out.
The proliferation of private fire arm ownership is not the answer and neither is police deaths quads. Only investments in the young people can turn the situation in Jamaica around. Unless the Government recognises this dilemma, God help us.
I am, etc.,
