The Editor, Sir:I am not sure just who I should be more angry with: Gassan Azan or The Gleaner for the front-page story published last Sunday.
Give credit to The Gleaner, for at least the first paragraph made it clear to everyone that the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) was not being paid by MegaMart for all the electricity it has been consuming at not one, but both its stores in Kingston and Portmore.
Yet, despite the evidence uncovered, what followed in the story was a most pathetic attempt at PR 'spin' I've seen.
Azan, the owner of MegaMart, would have us believe that un-beknown to him and his senior management, an unnamed employee:
Took it upon himself to save MegaMart millions by an illegal activity for which he could serve a prison term;
Colluded with engineers from overseas (presumably at his own expense) and had them to install illegal devices to save money for an unaware MegaMart.
Poor spin aside, this is a grave issue as Azan's stores have been implicated in an illegal activity. Many ordinary Jamaicans have done jail time for an act that is causing us all to pay more for electricity than we ought.
In Jamaica today, it would be too much for us to imagine any such outcome in this instance.
However, Azan has just been appointed as chairman of Jamaica Trade and Invest (formerly Jampro) by the Prime Minister. No one should have to tell Azan what is the right thing to do.
I am, etc.,
