Time for pragmatic action
How is this possible - that policemen who have executed the laws of the land are being gunned down like wild animals and the Government has done nothing except to express lame condolences?
Either the Government is incapable or unwilling to bring those depraved police killers to justice. Whenever a police loses his or her life to criminals, there should be no where to run nor anywhere to hide. The pressure should be so intense that even the area dons start talking quickly.
Our crime problem in Jamaica is complex. However, the Government can take pragmatic approaches to solving the crime problems.

Why is Dawn so angry?
One can imagine a journalist seeking to evoke public discussion on issues facing the society, but why is Dawn Ritch so angry, vicious and bitter?
I used to find her columns informative even if subtly cynical; now I find her articles most offensive. I used to see her in the same league as the late Morris Cargill, Wilmot Perkins, the late John Hearne, etc., but now she has totally lost it.
Does she need a new mentor? Has her years as a journalist not taught her anything? Certainly, we can be direct in our writings but we certainly do not have to expose young minds to such anger and callous description of people in authority. This only leads to children being disrespectful of their elders and their peers.
Ms. Ritch, we don't mind writers with different points of view, but not such obnoxious spouting.

Hopelessness abounds
In my conversations with other Jamaicans of sound mind, one constant theme comes through - there is an intensifying feeling of hopelessness, fear, frustration, despondency and resignation that the 'crime situation' will not change in any positive way. Disrespect in the society is so ingrained at all levels. Jamaicans have become hard-wired for selfishness and self-destruction.
If politicians of all stripes were not so self-serving, the situation in such a small country would have improved by now. All the demagogues of both party are concerned with is enriching their respective cliques, while the rest of us who can't afford armed guards (at taxpayers' expense) exist in abject fear and trepidation.
