Kingston College, Excelsior to contest Colts final
published: Saturday | December 8, 2007

Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

Kingston College (KC) and Excelsior advanced to the 2007 ISSA/Malta urban area Colts Under-16 schoolboy football final after scoring semi-final wins on Thursday at Winchester Park, St. George's College.

In the day's opening game, Excelsior defeated Wolmer's 3-1, after which KC beat their North Street rivals, St. George's College 2-0.

It was a welcome win for the boys - who consistently argue that they are from the right side of North Street - following their Manning Cup semi-final failure.

Second-half strikes from Prince Samuels in the 58th minute and Rohan Roye in the 62nd from the penalty spot guided the Purples into the final.

A delighted Yackovanco, KC's coach, described the win as a good one, but said they have more work to be do.

"It's a good win, but St. George's came at us in the latter stages," he said of his opponents, who created a few goalscoring chances in the final 20 minutes.

He added: "It was not how we expected the team to play but we will be ready for the final.

"The team did not execute as we would have wanted them to, but we will be ready for the final," he added.

St. George's coach, Marcel Gayle, said it was a good game while he gave credit to KC. Additionally, he said: "We missed a couple chances. If we had scored them, it would be a different scoreline."

The final is set for next week, but the exact date and venue have not yet been named.

Meanwhile, the quest for the rural titles in the respective Abner Wright and Galloway Cup competitions will continue on Monday with the semi-final matches.

In the Abner Wright Cup semis, Glenmuir will tackle Morant Bay High at 1:00 p.m., while Lennon and Paul Bogle will contest the feature game of the Brooks Park double-header at 3:00 p.m.

The Galloway Cup games pit Knockalva against Spaldings High at 1:00 p.m., with Porus going up against Green Pond at 3:00 p.m. Both games will take place at Jamalco Sports Club.
