Corruption at exam depots
published: Wednesday | December 5, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I have been watching the statistical reports being submitted as it relates to the number of road fatalities each year. I have heard accident analysts and statisticians put forward their findings and expectations for the coming year. To date, I do not think that any of the expectations have materialised.

This suggests that the root cause is not being addressed. I believe a big part of the problem relates to personnel at the examination depots accepting cash in return for a driver's licence.

In doing this, the authorities at the examination depots are allowing illiterate and incompetent drivers on the road. This may be one of the causes why there are so many road fatalities. This is a problem that the Ministry of Transport must curtail. Persons at the depots who are guilty of these acts should be treated as criminals. The law exempts no one.

I am, etc.,
