August Town coach laments poor finishing
published: Monday | December 3, 2007

Keisha Hill, Staff Reporter

August Town coach Calvert Fitzgerald blamed faulty finishing on his team's continued winless streak in the Cash Plus Premier League, following their 0-0 draw with Sporting Central Academy in a lethargic game at the UWI Bowl yesterday.

"The team is not playing badly but we have a serious problem in finishing. We're creating opportunities but we're not getting the ball in the back of the net. So we just have to continue working on that."

Still at the bottom of the league, August Town, now on nine points, and Sporting Central, on 11, will have to pull up their socks and register victories in their remaining encounters to boost their chances of staying in the competition.

Although both teams never played terribly in the first half, the players lacked focus and defended poorly. Additionally, enough force was not executed in the midfield as the players refused to effectively mark each other, leaving too much open space on each side.

Numerous opportunities came for August Town and Sporting Central to score but were wasted by hasty and irrational decisions on the part of the strikers. August Town, perhaps fearing the worst, began executing intense pressure on the Sporting Central defence in the second half, but to no avail as the game ended 0-0.

Kevin Williams, coach of Sporting Central, felt the game was open and his team could have easily gone home with three points.

"Overall, it was a satisfactory performance. There is always scope and room for improvement. Certain movements of the ball was lethargic and very slow in this game and as such we want to improve on that in our next game," Williams said.
