MORE THAN 80 first-form high school students, who recently sat the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT), received Victoria Mutual Building Society's GSAT 'Head-Start' scholarships at the bank's Scholarship and Award presentation ceremony held at the Alhambra Inn on Saturday. Other scholarships were also awarded to teachers and tertiary level students at the function.
Rich tradition
Dr. Rebecca Tortello, senior consultant in the Ministry of Education and keynote speaker at the event, lauded VMBS for its "rich tradition of philanthropy and corporate responsibility". She noted: "I would like to particularly emphasise how impressed we are with the structure of these scholarships in that they are awarded to students who have savings accounts."
Dr. Tortello said this criterion for the scholarship stressed the importance of, what she termed, "financial literacy", and that strong emphasis will be placed on this policy by the new administration.
