DJs as youth heroes
published: Monday | December 3, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

When I was growing up, I used to hear that a man who is wayward in his words is unstable and should not be entertained. I say that directly to confront those among us who have a microphone and are called DJs.

Whether they are some form of 'Killa', Beenie, Kartel, Time Piece or Animal Man, they seem to fit the bill of exactly who should not be entertained.

I am not trying to "box bread" out of anyone's mouth or fight against "ghetto youth". I am simply using The Gleaner as a medium to show how wayward and very unstable DJs appear.

My alma mater asked me to come back for Boys' Day to have a chat with some of our young men. In the discussion, what is already well known was reinforced: DJs are their heroes.

But, I have a couple questions for you heroes. "How can you on one hand sing about giving someone innumerable gunshots, then come later to the same school kids and appeal for peace?" Also, how can you say 'Love your women' yet you speak of them as just being a little higher than cattle at a slaughter house?

Remember, these are questions from an ordinary guy who walks the street every day and rides on the bus to work, not from anyone who feels he is better than you. Do you really see yourself as being stable? We often say people who speak from both sides of their mouth are dangerous, but by your words, are you any less dangerous?

Why sing of death, sexual savagery and destruction, and then beg the youth to stop the violence? Isn't that embarrassing to you sometimes?

I am, etc.,
