Malcolm stars at Caymanas Park
published: Thursday | November 29, 2007

Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer

APPRENTICE RIDER Carlton Malcolm highlighted yesterday's 10-race pro-gramme at Caymanas Park with three winners, including the highly fancied UGOTTABELIEVE for trainer Neive Graham in race No. 5 of the second CTL series over the straight five course. In addition to UGOTTABELIEVE, who made all at odds of 3-1 for a decisive win in the nightpan, Malcolm won aboard 8-1 chance REGGAE RUCKUS (made all) for in-form trainer Gary Subratie in the third race over over 1800 metres and followed up in the next race aboard another 8-1 chance, RIGETTO.

Trained by Paul Smith, the sparingly raced filly returned from a near two-year absence to win narrowly on this her fourth outing. Malcolm thus pushed his season's tally to 46 to be a clear fourth in the jockeys' standings, which is headed by fellow apprentice Omar Walker (81 wins) who started-a-two-day suspension yesterday.

In Walker's absence, closest rival Trevor Simpson, who started the day 13 winners adrift, made some inroads by riding two winners, both in driving finishes.

In the nick of time

The first of these was 9-5 chance ME LLAMO who got up in the nick of time to catch and beat the front-running outsider SHAKE YOUR BOOTY by a head in the second race over 1400 metres. He then followed up with 2-5 favourite CLASSY BOY PETE in the day's principal feature for the Gladiator Trophy over 1400 metres, this for open allowance horses.

After sweeping past the early leader AITCHEMSBEAGLE at the halfway stage and turning for home two lengths on top, CLASSY BOY PETE had to be driven over the final 200 metres in order to stave off 7-2 chance PITTACUS by a length in a field of six.

Purchased for the record price of $2 million at the 2004 yearling sale, the four-year-old chestnut colt by Royal Minister out of Secret Pleasure is owned by newly appointed CTL director Peter Lawson and bred by Howard Hamilton, a past chairman of CTL.

CLASSY BOY PETE is trained by 14-time champion Philip Feanny who is scheduled to leave the island today for Puerto Rico to see his charge, RUM TALK, run in the US$300,000 Caribbean Classic on Sunday.

Highly fancied ACCOMPONG won the opening Rameses Trophy race over 1600 metres quite easily with Charles Hussey riding for his brother, Percy, and mom, Ruth. And the Morris Powell-trained 2-5 favourite REGAL SELECTION romped the Abbie Grannum Memorial Cup for maiden two-year-olds with Richie Mitchell aboard.
