Cornwall burst Garvey bubble
published: Sunday | November 25, 2007

Adrian Frater, News Editor

WESTERN BUREAU:

CORNWALL COLLEGE ended Garvey Maceo's 17-game unbeaten streak in emphatic style yesterday, handing the Ben Francis Knockout champions a 2-0 defeat in their second-round Group One daCosta Cup quarter-final fixture at Jarrett Park.

While Cornwall College's goals came from Michael Allen and Mikhail Weatherly, the man of the match for the Montego Bay team was definitely defender Bjohn Moore, who did a brilliant man-marking job of Garvey Maceo's prolific striker, Ashton Bennett, who was limited to just one chance in the game.

"Our plan today was to play 10 against 10 with Moore's sole duty being to keep Bennett out of the game," said Cornwall College's coach, Dr. Dean Weatherly. "The youngster executed the task extremely well and it paid off for us in the end," he said.

Sole leadership

By virtue of the win, Cornwall College have taken sole leadership of the group with four points, while Garvey Maceo, who stay on three points, now share second place with rejuvenated Fair Prospect, who registered a surprise 2-0 win over Manchester High School in Portland.

Over in Group Two, champions Glenmuir rushed to the top of the standings in impressive style, scoring a big 3-0 win over Rusea's in their game at St. Elizabeth High. They moved up to four points, one ahead of the vanquished 'Russians'.

Bad defending

"We did not play as well as we could today and paid the price for some bad defending," said Rusea's coach Anthony 'Follies' Williams, whose team lead the group going into the game. "We will just have to quickly regroup for our next game against Clarendon College.'

On an afternoon in which the Jackie Walters-coached Glenmuir team played like champions, they were rewarded with goals from Ricardo Webb, John-Ross Doyley and skipper James Thomas.

In the second of the two Group Two games, Munro College rebounded from their first-round loss to Rusea's, clipping Clarendon College 1-0 in their much-hyped fixture at Brancourt in Clarendon. Jermaine Saams was the man on target for the Hopeton Gilchrist-coached Munro College.

"A victory after our first-round loss is a good result and it is now for us to score another win in our next game to keep our hopes of advancing intact," said Gilchrist. "We will definitely be going all out to beat Glenmuir."

YESTERDAY'S RESULTS

Group One: Cornwall College 2 Garvey Maceo 0, Fair Prospect 2 Manchester High 0.

Group Two: Glenmuir 3 Rusea's 0, Munro 1 Clarendon 0.
