Bravo set for West Indies vice-captaincy

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):

All-rounder Dwayne Bravo is poised to be named vice-captain of the West Indies team for the upcoming tour to Zimbabwe.

The 24-year-old Bravo was recommended for the post by the senior West Indies selection panel comprising former Test opener Gordon Greenidge, Andy Roberts and Clyde Butts. Bravo's recommendation was confirmed after a slight delay as several WICB directors expressed concerns about the selection.

"The board's ratification of Bravo came after round robin discussions between the directors," a source close to the situation told CMC Sports.

"It is just that some of the directors had certain questions as to whether or not Bravo had captained any team before."

The WICB meet in St. Lucia tomorrow for a full board meeting and Bravo is expected to be announced as the choice as vice-captain.

Bravo has never captained his native T&T cricket team or served as vice-captain of the team. However, he recently led of one of the trial teams in preparation for the KFC Cup regional limited overs championships.

He will be deputy to Chris Gayle who was last week appointed captain for the tour to Zimbabwe.

Bravo made his Test debut at Lord's in July 2004 and has appeared in 23 Tests, scoring 1404 runs at an average of 34.24 and a highest score of 113. He has taken 45 wickets.

In 71 One-Day Internationals, he has scored 992 runs at an average of 24.19 with a highest of 113 not out and has taken 78 wickets.

West Indies leave tomorrow for Zimbabwe where they will play five ODIs, starting November 30.
