Gay vows to break world record

SALVO, North Carolina (CMC):

World double sprint champion Tyson Gay has vowed to break Jamaican Asafa Powell's 100 metre world record.

The 25-year-old Gay, who won the 100 metres and 200 metres in Osaka, Japan at the World Championships earlier this year, said he was confident of eclipsing the Powell's 9.74 second mark set in September.

"The only thing that is stopping Tyson Gay from running into the 9.7s are the wind conditions," he said. "When I have the right wind reading, I will truly run something amazing. I know I am capable. If I don't break the record it will be because of the wind conditions."

Gay conquered Powell in Osaka, beating him in the final of the 100 metres and forcing the Jamaican into third place.

The duo have not met since and next year's Olympic Games in Beijing, China is already being billed as a clash between the two sprint icons.

Gay said he was keen to reproduce his success in Osaka in Beijing..

"I want it all. I want to go to the trials (U.S Olympic) healthy and come out victorious in the 100 and 200, and do the same in the Olympics," he asserted.
